BASIC SEAM TYPES FOR SEWING. Lesson 1: straight seam, zizac seam and curved seam. Hi all. In the last video I showed you how to insert a sewing machine needle and how to work with bobins. In this video I will show you some basic seam types for sewing. You may need some fabric pieces and scissors for practices. Here are some fabric pieces for sewing practice. You should iron them before practice. Firstly I will show you straight plain seam. Here are 2 fabric pieces that will be used for straight seam. For industrial sewing machines use your knee to move the knee lifter on the right to hold up the presser foot and then put on the fabric piece under the presser foot. You have got line on the throat plate which help you keep your stiches straight or you can use pen and ruler to draw straight lines for sewing practice.
Now make the first stiches by press on the pedal below the table by your foot. After that release the pedal and make the backstiche by press both the backtack lever and then pedal for a while. After the stich reaches the start point, release the pedal and backtack lever. Then proceed press the pedal to make the straight line. Try to make the line as straight as possible. At the end point, do not forget to make some inverse stiches like we made at the start point. Now let the knee lifter up and release the fabric piece and cut the needles. Do not to keep your eyes just on the needle while sewing, it will make you feel dizzy. Try to have a open look. You can draw parallel lines and practice more to sharpen sewing skill. Now try to sew traight seams without drawn lines. Now we try to change the direction of straight seams. You can draw like I do or lines in another direction.
Do not forget the back stich at the beginning of seams and sew slower at the change direction point. You can use hand wheel instead of pedal . Do not forget back stich at the end of your seam. You can draw more lines and practice your self. Now we will sew curved seams. Here are two overlap fabric pieces. You can draw semicircle like me or another curved lines. Hold up presser foot and put the fabric under the needle. Do not forget back stich and the beginning and end of seams. Sew slowly for small circle and use presser foot to release and change the position of fabrics smoothly. Control the position of fabrics by your hands while pedal and knee lifter by your foot. Do not forget back stich. . Try to sew another biger or smaller semicircles that is 0.5 cm far from the old one. Of course, you can draw semicirles before sewing. Practice more to combine your hands and feet in sewing fluently.
